Which storage class should we use?

It depends on access frequency and how quickly you need data back. Standard suits frequently read data; infrequent-access tiers suit monthly reads; archive tiers suit compliance data read rarely, with retrieval time and fees as the trade-off. Where access is unpredictable, intelligent tiering usually beats a fixed choice because it moves objects automatically based on real access.

How much can lifecycle policies save?

On estates with no lifecycle management, storage savings of 40–60% are common, because most of the data has not been read in months but is still billed at hot-tier rates. The exact figure depends on your access profile, which the assessment measures directly.

What makes a backup immutable?

Object lock or equivalent retention locking prevents deletion or overwriting for a defined period, even by an administrator. Combined with versioning and a separate account boundary, it means ransomware or a mistaken script cannot destroy your recovery point.

How is our data encrypted?

At rest with AES-256 and in transit with TLS. You can use provider-managed keys or customer-managed keys in a KMS where you control rotation, access policy and audit logging. Regulated environments generally want customer-managed keys so key access is separable from data access.

What about egress costs?

Egress is a real design constraint, not an afterthought. We plan for it by keeping compute close to data, using CDN caching for distributed reads, choosing replication patterns that avoid unnecessary cross-region transfer, and flagging retrieval fees on archive tiers before you commit to them.

Can you provide shared file storage for applications?

Yes. Managed file systems supporting NFS and SMB, sized for the throughput and IOPS your application needs, are part of the design where object storage is not the right fit — for example, legacy applications that expect a POSIX file system.
